Arizona residents take note: fifteen states currently publish the names of residents who owe money for back taxes. While Arizona isn’t one of these states – yet – the success of the other fifteen may soon convince Arizona to try this tactic.
Currently, tax delinquents who owe money to the states of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia can expect to find their names in the newspaper or on the internet. And the shame game has worked like a charm.
After sending letters to Wisconsin residents who owed the state money warning them that their names would be posted on the internet, the state collected $8 million in back taxes. In Connecticut, seventy of the state’s top one hundred delinquents reached payment agreements with the stateafter being threatened with exposure. That’s big bucks in return for some postage and the cost of a website.
But this tactic only works with those who have the means to pay their back tax bills. For those in real financial difficulty, they may have to bear the further shame of having their identities made public.
